How to Clean A Cotton Comforter Set
The best way to keep your comforter clean is not to let it get dirty. Duvet covers are highly recommended. Barring that, just make sure to take care of the cleaning before your bedding gets really dirty. Body oils, perspiration, pet hair, dust and plain old dirt build up on your bedding. So, how should you clean your comforter set?
Depending upon the fill, you will want to consider carefully before washing it in a washing machine. For example, down will lose its loft and become an ideal home for dust mites. If the only way to clean it to wash it might be best to have it cleaned by a professional. Before subjecting your cotton comforter set to washing, check it over carefully for holes and threadbare areas. Feather fills will tend to come through worn areas and take away from your comforter’s ability to keep you warm. Other fills may also come through holes and torn seams.
If you have to machine wash a down-filled comforter, use a washing machine that doesn’t have an agitator. Front loaders usually fit the bill, but make sure it’s large enough to effectively wash the size comforter you have. Some comforters will say that they are machine washable right on the label. Just read the instructions carefully. Repeated machine washing can matt feather and feather-like fills, flattening out your comforter.
Air dry or use a medium heat setting on your dryer to avoid burning the fill. Dry for 15-30 minutes. Take it out and fluff it up. Repeat these steps until it is completely dry. For good measure line dry it (outside if you can) to make sure it’s really, really dry before you put it back on the bed.
There are two things you can do to make your cotton comforter set last for years to come: Shake it out and take it out. Shake it out each time you make your bed. And, take it out on sunny days for fresh air. These two activities should keep it fluffed, fresh and make it inhospitable to dust mites and other allergens.
